In Chelsea's only other appearance in a European final, they won the trophy in 1971, beating Real Madrid 2-1 in a replay in Athens. Chelsea secured their place in Stockholm with a stirring semi-final victory over Italian side Vicenza, with Mark Hughes volleying the aggregate winner 14 minutes from time in the second leg at Stamford Bridge. In the other semi-final Stuttgart overcame Lokomotiv Moscow of Russia with a 3-1 aggregate win.
